This variety is grown in Piedmont’s Cuneo Province, with the greatest density of vineyards found on the left bank of the Tanaro River in the Roero DOC zone. The first written record referring to this variety appeared in a document dated 1478, in which reference is made to a vineyard planted with moscatelli and renexi (the archaic name for Arneis). Arneis is usually vinified to dryness, although some producers also make a sweet wine from semi-dried grapes. It is used in combination with other local varieties (Favorita, Cortese) as a base for sparkling wines. The name Arneis is derived from a dialect word which refers to an odd person or a child who never listens to his parents. In the old days, a row or two of this variety was often planted in red grape vineyards and its anomalous nature probably explains its name. This is a refreshing straw-yellow wine, with delicate apricot and greenapple notes on the nose and palate.
