Cortese is believed to have originated in the Tortona and Alessandria zones of Piedmont. It then spread into the Oltrepó Pavese and to vineyards around Lake Garda. It has a high concentration of sugar, substantial acidity and relatively subdued alcohol. The best examples of Cortese are supple and have tenuous scents. When describing such wines, the fine line between delicate and insipid has occasionally been blurred. Straw coloured. The best Corteses are supple, and have very delicate perfumes of apples and apricot. On the palate, they have an attractive saline quality. Cortese di Gavi is the best known example of this variety. Its vineyards are planted on the hillsides around the ancient walled town of Gavi in the province of Alessandria. This wine was first championed in the early 1950s. It subsequently became Italy’s second white DOCG (after Albana di Romagna). A furious spate of experimentation began with techniques such as cryo-maceration and the use of barrique. Today, many producers are coming to the conclusion that the wine shows at its best in its simpler, easy-drinking style. Oaked Cortese di Gavi, while often very well made and satisfying, tends toward anonymity. Such wines could, in fact, be substituted for oaked Chardonnays from anywhere in the world. Before the outbreak of phylloxera at the end of the 19th century, Cortese was one of the most widely planted white varieties in the Novi Ligure and Tortona zones. The vineyards producing Colli Tortonesi Cortese lie on a band of hills in the province of Alessandria, on the border with Lombardy. Its wines, which may be still, semi- or fully sparkling, are made exclusively from Cortese. Cortese dell’Alto Monferrato and Piemonte Cortese are made from a minimum of 85% of the named grape, and they, too, are made in a variety of styles. Oltrepo Pavese Cortese is made from at least 85% of the named grape. Its alcohol level hovers at around 10.5°. It comes in still, semi- and fully sparkling versions. Garda Cortese (minimum 85% Cortese) is fresh and slightly sweet. Its production zone lies on the hillsides around Lake Garda, and includes vineyards in the Veneto commune of Verona and the Lombardy communes of Mantova and Brescia.
