The ancient Croatina vine may have originated in the Oltrepo Pavese of Lombardy. Due to its resistance to oidium (powdery mildew) it gained ground in the late 19th century. Today, it is most widely planted in Lombardy (in the Oltrepo Pavese zone), Piedmont (in the provinces of Alessandria, Vercelli and Novara) and Emilia-Romagna (in the Colli Piacentini area). In the Oltrepo Pavese and Piacentini zones, this variety is sometimes called Bonarda. This creates no end of confusion for Italian wine lovers, as Bonarda is also the name of a separate variety. In Oltrepo Pavese, Croatina plays a part in the blend (along with Uva Rara, Barbera, Vespolina and Pinot Nero) of Oltrepo Pavese red and rosé, Buttafuoco and Sangue di Giuda. Croatina is also the primary grape in Oltrepo Pavese Bonarda, which is often slightly fizzy and Lambrusco-like. In the Colli Piacentini zone of Emilia-Romagna, Croatina is blended with Barbera to make a full-bodied wine called Gutturnio, and it is the sole component in Colli Piacentini Bonarda! In Piedmont it is usually blended with other grapes. However, this region also produces a varietal Croatina. Deep, purply-ruby. It has the fresh, lightly fruity perfume of just-pressed grapes. The wine has a certain characteristic earthiness and slightly rustic tannins, good acidity and is medium-bodied.
