This ancient Southern Italian variety originated in the area around Lapia, a hamlet in the hills east of Avellino in Campania. Its structure makes it suitable for a certain amount of ageing, as well as for appassimento. Like many indigenous (and low yielding) grape varieties, Fiano faced extinction by the early 1970s. Fortunately for wine lovers everywhere Dr. Antonio Mastroberardino, who has a passion for viticultural history, stepped in to rescue it. There are two varietal Fianos in Campania. The most well known is Fiano di Avellino. Small amounts of Greco, Coda di Volpe and Trebbiano Toscano may be added to the blend of this dry white. Sannio Fiano, whose production zone lies in the province of Benevento, is made in a dry, still style as well as a sparkling version, which may be either semi- or fully sweet. Fiano plays a part in the blends of the Campanian DOCs of Cilento Bianco, Penisola Sorretina Bianco and Vesuvio Bianco. In Puglia, it is in the blend of Gravina, whose production zone is in the province of Bari. This wine may be dry or semi-sweet, and either still or sparkling. Straw yellow in colour. One finds scents of toasted hazelnuts on the nose. There is usually a mineral/salty note on the palate of this supple wine.
