Lagrein

Lagrein flourishes in the Trentino-Alto Adige region, where it is the primary grape for Lagrein Dunkel (or Lagrein Scuro), a well-structured, deeply-coloured red with ageing potential, and Lagrein Kretzer (Lagrein Rosato), a delicate rosè intended for drinking young. When Lagrein Dunkel is aged for at least two years, it may be labelled as riserva. When Lagrein is produced in the vineyards of the commune of Bolzano, it can be labelled as ‚iLagrein di Gries‚i (Grieser Lagrein or Lagrein aus Gries). The name of this variety is thought to be derived from Lagara, a colony of Magna Grecia noted for the quality of its wines. Deep ruby, with a slight fuchsia sheen. The wine has crisp acidity, and on the palate one finds an attractive blackberry flavour, which is reminiscent of bramble crumble.
