The winegrowing estate, La Fontursia, is situated near Ripatransone, a historic center that is one of the oldest and most characteristic of the Piceno area and also rich in historical references and medieval evocations. The name La Fontursia derives from the language of the ancient ‚iTusci‚i populace that in fact once had a settlement located on the road leading to the present vineyard. They occupied a fort located next to an important spring that at the time was called ‚iSpring of the Tusci and was reputed to have restorative powers. Subsequently, the name was transformed into La Fontursia, the name now borne by both the street and the winery. The vineyard is characterized by its splendid position, being situated between the Adriatic Sea, just 3 km away as the crow flies, and the Monti Sibillini. Its hilly location, together with the sea breezes, gives rise to a cool and temperate climate that when combined with the fertile, sandy soil create a proper balance of soil and climatic conditions that is ideal for the growing of grapevines. The Veccia family has passed the ancient vocation of winemaking from father to son. In this family-owned business the traditions are conserved while being renewed with modern technologies that take advantage of the potential offered by the location.

Located in Valgatara, right in the heart of Valpolicella Classico, the Luigi Righetti estate is truly a family run winery. Righetti’s wines exhibit an exceptional balance between fruit, wood aging, acidity and alcohol. The result is a line of wines that have good aging potential, but are available for early consumption as well. The most exciting tradition to evolve from the Veneto region is the process used to dry grapes prior to pressing. Amarone and Campolieti, the ripasso Valpolicella, have traditionally been the products to benefit from this process. Gian Maria Righetti is the fourth generation within the Righetti family to carry on the family, wine-making tradition. Gian Maria’s father, Luigi, who is still active in the estate’s day to day operation, was the first in the family to consider production beyond supply of local demand. Gian Maria has gone one step further by crafting a few wines with a more international flair. In addition to the traditional Valpolicella and Amarone, the estate has produced another exceptional wine using grape varieties not commonly grown in the region: Valsaia, made with corvina, cabernet sauvignion and sangiovese. Like Amarone, the grapes for making Valsaia are also dried, at least partially, prior to fermentation, giving this wine incredible richness and depth.

Castello di Querceto

Castello di Querceto and the lands surrounding it are places full of history and atmosphere. Once the castle rose in a strategic and defensive position like a sentinel on the ‚iVia Cassia Imperiale‚i, one of the main roman roads built by the Emperor Adriano in the 123 a.C. Nowadays it protects the treasure of its vineyards and olive-groves which spread along the valley of Dudda from ‚iPasso del Sugame‚i, and, after Dudda, towards Lucolena and ‚iMonte San Michele‚i. The castle dates back to the Lombardic time and it still preserves the medieval shape with a long ‚iL‚i body and the tower with the Guelph battlement in the middle of the front. It was built in the XVI century a.C. after the destruction of the previous building, burnt and sacked during one of the several local wars at the end of the XV century. Also the houses surrounding the castle and the boundary walls were dismantled. Only the side of the wall dominating the valley remained and it is still there supporting the new building. During the construction the castle was owned by the Canigiani family, later it was bought by the Pitti, and remained for a long time their country residence. Castello di Querceto is about 7 kilometres far from Greve in Chianti, at about 470 metres above sea level. Its land extends over 190 hectares: 60 are planted with vineyards, 5 with olive trees while the remaining are woods, mostly of oak and chestnut trees. In the bottom of the valley there is a little fishing lake. The estate is developed around the castle and the winery, where the new and modern structures have been built respecting the style of the ancient buildings. Only a country house and its hayloft are separated from the main structure; both recently restored, they have been divided in several apartments for the agriturismo. The vineyards and the olive-groves are located between 400 and 530 metres above sea level; for this reason they are considered high-hill fields. The geological nature of the ground is very particular, being part of the little area in northern side of the ‚iChianti Mountains‚i: it is composed of ‚ipolychrome-schists‚i dating back to the Cretaceous-Eocene period.

The wine that the company has produced, has been awarded of a lot of prizes and it has received significant recognitions in Italy and abroad. All this is the result of an intense work, whose purpose is to develop the viticulture and the wine-making of Calabria. Along the Jonic shore, in province of Crotone, among vineyards, secular olives and millenary ruins, there are the cities of Cirò and Cirò Marina, shared in May 1952 from a unique community, particularly significant historically and culturally, because of its ancient origin and the wonderful civilization expressed. On these land geek colonization developed from the VIII century b. c. here, as in the whole Magna Gracie, there was the blossoming of the wine civilization developed at the same rate with the economic growth. Near Sibari, a coasting town sited a lithe in the north of Cirò, a real enodotto was built; it was a clay duct that brought wine in the harbour area where it was picked in big amphorae and embarked. Between history and philosophy, this area san the propulsive action of Pitagora and of his school, which suppested a spiritual renewal of humanity. From Crotone, after internal disagreement, the philosopher and mathematician wandered and it’s possible he also lived in the near Cirò. In fact, one of his disciples, Milone from Crotone, famous for his muscular strength, drank wine a lot. The systems of farming and wine – making used by greek farmers were repeated for centuries in the area of Cirò and continued this secular tradition in a delimitated area. Someone considers the Cirò as a wine that exhales Hellenism, son of sun and clay; but, apart from the sensation of who knows the wine, the Cirò is a dowel of knowing that must be added to the local archaeological founds, to the Pythagorean heritage and to the agricultural culture.

Along the charming coast of the Alta Maremma, to the south-west of Florence and about 100 km from the city, in the small and prestigious DOC Bolgheri area lies Tenuta Argentiera, which is part of the old Estate of Donoratico that once belonged to the Florentine Serristori family. In Etruscan times, the plateau of the Tenuta was rich in canals, natural springs and silver mines, from which the estate‚is present name derives, which made the area an important mining and agricultural centre. The Tenuta is now owned by the brothers Corrado and Marcello Fratini. The Tenuta‚is owners have always paid special attention to this fascinating place by exalting, in every possible way, the nature of a land that is strongly dedicated to the production of excellent red wines. 60 hectares of the land‚is total 80 hectares are made up of specialized vineyards, all classified as DOC [Registered Designation of Origin] Bolgheri. Its vineyards are completely surrounded by a luxuriant Mediterranean vegetation, and the countryside where the Tenuta is situated is circumscribed by avenues of secular maritime pines and olive groves, in a charming and richly-scented landscape. This varied land is cultivated with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah, which are extremely typical, superb quality vines of the Bolgheri area. The project for the Wine Cellar draws inspiration from the architectural styles typical of the Tuscan coast between Livorno and Grosseto, with leaning, rather thick walls that guarantee the natural thermoregulation of the cellars. The grapes, after being hand-selected and picked from their bunches in the collection rooms, fall directly by force of gravity into the vinification cellar underground, right into stainless steel barrels for fermentation both through pressing and through remounting and delestage systems. An efficient computerized system guarantees a constant temperature by means of hot and cold water flows. Lastly, the wine refining cellars hold the Barriques in French oak, maintained at 16°C at all times, where the vinification process is completed.

Cordero di Montezemolo

Wines of this winery are for sale on Stelo italian wine

At the very heart of the Langhe, square in the center of the Barolo region, there is a cedar tree that has stood over 30 hectares of vines for 150 years. Year after year, this prized stretch of land works silently to produce some of the wines that have made Piedmont famous all over the world.
The Monfalletto estate has belonged to the Falletti family for more than six centuries and is now the property of Giovanni and Enrico Cordero di Montezemolo, nephews of the Marchioness Luigia Falletti and sons of Paolo Cordero di Montezemolo. It was Paolo Cordero di Montezemolo that began producing and marketing Piedmontese wines in 1940. Up until then, production had always been destined solely for direct consumption. The Monfalletto estate boasts a centuries-old history. Its beginnings date back to April 3, 1340, when Pietrino Falletti became the owner of the commune of La Morra, which was made possible by a loan granted by the commune of Alba. Through the centuries the family increased its holdings, sold them, divided them up, lost them, passed them down to heirs, and so on, through the various family branches that appeared and disappeared throughout the whole of Piedmont. The La Morra property, however, was held continuously through 16 generations, from 1340 until the Countess Luigia Falletti di Rodello passed away in 1941. Because this particular branch of the family tree had died out with the countess, the property was passed to the closest relative and legitimate heir, Paolo Cordero di Montezemolo, the countess‚is nephew and father of current owners Giovanni and Enrico Cordero di Montezemolo, who now care for the vines and fruit themselves. The Monfalletto estate in the district of Annunziata was already listed on topographical maps and early land registers from as far back as the middle ages. Today, the property consists of 28 continuous hectares that are being cultivated in every direction around the buildings situated on the hilltops. The vines, which produce the traditional local grape varieties (Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera, Arneis), boast an exclusive and highly desirable location, as well as plants of considerable age and a unique and complex subsoil. Year after year, this prized stretch of land works silently to produce some of the wines that have made Piedmont famous all over the world. The winery and the farm, following several years of restoration and expansion, is today a perfect symbol and example of integrated architecture, where an age-old, traditional structure merges seamlessly and elegantly with modern innovation. Within these walls is the past, present, and future of Cordero di Montezemolo wines.

The estate owned by the Azienda Agricola Barone Cornacchia farm is what is left of the vast fiefdoms conceded originally by the King of Naples to the Cornacchia family, together with the baronial title, towards the beginning of the Sixteenth Century. Over the Centuries, discords and vicissitudes modified and restricted the overall dimensions of these fiefdoms, and in the second half of the Nineteenth Century, the territorial property, consisting mainly of sunny hills, remained more or less the same as it is today. This business has alway been family run and become the main job for its proprietor. Piero Cornacchia, a doctor in Law, took over his father’s business in 1971 and has, over the past 34 years, started to modernise the company by increasing the number of grapevines and adopting the new technologies used in winemaking, in order to maintain the constant high quality of his products. The company first started selling their wine in barrels which were for big wine cellars in piemonte, during the 1920′s then, later during the 1930′s, it was bottled and mainly sold locally and around Milan. In the 1970′s the company started to export their goods to Switzerland and to the most important european countries, furthermore, their Montepulciano d’Abruzzo was exported to North America. In 1991, the company increased its importance on the foreing market, mainly in Japan. Today, the Barone Cornacchia’s philosophy is that of maintaining the tradition, the typicality and genuiness of its products. Their recent investments in the new technologies and vineyards confirm the company’s aim to obtain a high quality product.

Cantine del Notaio

Wines of this winery are for sale on Stelo italian wine

The passion for winemaking is not new to the Giuratrabocchetti family and has been handed down for generations. And in 1998 the Cantine del Notaio wine estate was born from this same tradition, when both Gerardo Giuratrabocchetti, with his degree in Agricultural Science, and his wife Marcella, took up the Aglianico del Vulture challenge. They decided to combine tradition, innovation, history and terroir in the vines growing in their vineyards. Together with Luigi Moio, Full Professor of Enology at the University of Naples, valuable collaboration and extensive research began on the winemaking potential of this grape, the most important in Southern Italy. A proud but difficult vine, capable of yielding wines with extraordinary personality. The Aglianico grape has been well known since ancient Greek times. Celebrated by the Latin poet Horace, it is grown on the slopes of Mount Vulture. And this is the origin of the three natural factors determining the constitution and ripening of these grapes. Firstly, the volcanic soil is fertile and rich in particular mineral elements. Then the tufo rock layers, deep down, act as water reservoirs during the drier periods of the year: what the local peasants call ‚imilking the tufo‚i. Thirdly there is the unique micro-climate. The bunches of fruit are carefully selected and knowledgeably handled; they will yield a strong wine with a notable personality, precious ruby red color and complex aromas. For this reason, our Winery has paid especial attention to its choice of vineyards. Our 26 hectares, (approx. 62 acres) are distributed amongst the most characteristic and renowned hillsides in the Mount Vulture area, (the villages of Rionero, Barile, Ripacandida, Maschito e Ginestra), and possess vines more than a hundred years old. These areas have different soils, (sand, volcanic residue, medium consistency or clay ) but the same layer of volcanic tufo in common, and a pedoclimatic exposition which allows for perfect ripening of the grapes, amongst the very latest to be harvested (mid-October to mid-November).

Giribaldi

Wines of this winery are for sale on Stelo italian wine

As wine culture is complex and subtle and needs to be instilled and taught, the standard of quality of the products we offer is excellent so as not to disappoint not only expectations, but also the imagination of people whose heart has always been with us and who have looked with longing on Piedmont as a land of dreams. This is the spirit on which the company is based, benefiting as it does, furthermore, from the outstanding climatic and soil conditions of its vineyards combined with great passion for the craft of transforming their yeld into fine wines with such particular tasting qualities. Azienda Giribaldi Mario was founded at the begining of the xx century and has now been farming for three generations. Times in those days were hard and agriculture was not only one of the rare sources of economic support but a reason to be proud of those strong ties with a ground that caused so much suffering. The people however, were used to sacrificing themselvers for the land. Today following the example set by tradition, and for the love of something as genuine and alive as wine the work begun by our fathers and grandfathers before them lives on with the same passion. Times are still hard and changeable. The quantity produced is a final result and represents the logical consequence of a continual process of improvement and consolidation that begins with the tilling of the land and continues with the technology of transformation. What has not changed since then is the fortunate location of the winery in the heart of the Langhe clearly an extraordinary wine growing land, but above all a land for culture and traditions. The colour, sounds, smell and flavours emerging from this area are the true expression for culture, a means of communication, an image in itself. Our efforts and commitment are directed towards these issues; making good wines produced in keeping with the traditions of our land that have the right tasting properties for everyday consumption and will prove pleasing and stimulating on every social occasion. One of our main objectives is to better the quality of the grapes through a selection of the vine clones, without however leaving behing the other important factors in the vineyard. A new important novelty which has been introduced into the company, is the production of biological wine. In a market which is becoming more and more aware of the use of chemical products in the alimentary sector, we thought it necessary, and interesting to move in this direction. On the other hand, biological is recognized at a European level and it is an opportunity directed not only towards a consumers niche but an increasing reality wich is destined to confront directly with the conventional production. Seeing as the demand for organic wine is increasing, above all from the overseas it is understandable that it is in our interest to work in this direction. In fact 70% of our company’s production is exported in different countries. A choice made with the intention of communicating to the world the image of our civilization, that can really be the ambassador for our wines, our people and all the other aspects of the culture of our Langhe.

Lun

Wines of this winery are for sale on Stelo italian wine

The winery H. LUN has been a synonym for excellent quality wines since 1840. It has occupied a central position in the history of South Tyrolean wine making for more than 150 years. As early as in 1840, Alois Lun, a winegrower of great vision and expertise, showed the entrepreneurial courage and perseverance to give its name only to the most excellent South Tyrolean wines. The quality brand H. LUN was introduced. According to the philosophy underlying the winery, our wines have been differentiating in continuity and quality to date. Our winemaker selects carefully the grapes depending on the vineyard site and quality to best express the manifold South Tyrolean landscape. Still today the art of selecting the grapes from the best vineyards is essential to maintain the unique characteristics of the LUN wines. Our assortment is as manifold as the South Tyrolean landscape and includes three quality standards: the classic line, the Sanbichler line and the Albertus line. 1840 was an important year in the history of the winery H.LUN, which is not only the oldest private South Tyrolean winery, but displayed also pioneering spirit in the marketing of bottled wines. Since the first day it has sold only bottled wines, which was rather exceptional until some decades ago and contributed essentially to the good reputation of the winery among wine lovers. The winery H.LUN could generally not use wines out of its own production, but bought selected quality wines in barrels. This strategy, however, became more difficult as the trend developed towards the marketing of wines made from own grapes. The family Bracchetti, owner of the winery from 1976 to 1998, detected the trend and sold the winery H.LUN to the winegrowers cooperative Girlan, which decided to run the winery as independent enterprise. Straight away, 30 ha of vineyards situated in the immediate neighbourhood of the Plattenhof, where today‚is headquarters is established, were put at our winery‚is disposal. This was the first step to the independence of the winery H. LUN and contemporarily presented the considerable challenge to bring the winery to the top of the South Tyrolean wine industry.

Since 1670 the Negro family cultivates vineyards on the Roero hills, works to increase the value of this wonderful corner of Piemonte, dedicating her wines to the prestigious native vines: Favorita and white grape Arneis, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Bonarda, the long grape Dolcetto and Brachetto among the black ones. Today it is about 60 hectares of vineyards, placed between the historical Perdaudin farm-house in Monteu Roero, that of S.Vittore in Canale and Basarin in Neive. The grapes grow up in the best sunny places, in calcareous soils of alluvial origin that differ from hill to hill. The different soils and microclimates originate well-defined and rich in taste wines. Many prices have recognized these wines‚i personality, to which Giovanni Negro dedicates himself with passion together with his sons Gabriele, Angelo the house oenologist, Emanuela, Giuseppe and the wife Marisa, to whom is reserved the task to receive the guests in the welcome wine-cellar in S.Anna of Monteu Roero. Before the current owner, Giovanni Negro, the history of Azienda Agricola Negro Angelo e Figli was in the hands of another character who carried his name. In 1670 Giovanni Dominico Negro, son of Audino, was the owner of the property know today as the Perdaudin estate, with its prestigious vineyards and a house with an oven, threshing floor, cellar and vineyards. These historical memories are all registered in the archives at the Monteu Roero town council and remain as indelible traces of a past that has remained in the limelight of both the press headlines and local territory. Here, between Monteu Roero and Canale, where the lofty hills stretch up towards the sun, you can find the vineyards and cellars of Azienda Agricola Negro Angelo e Figli – almost fifty hectares of vines, where the traditional varieties of the area are favoured: Arneis , Favorita, Barbera, Nebbiolo, Bonarda and Brachetto. The heart of the family-run business is in the Cascina Riveri barn in the small hamlet of S. Anna. Here the wines are born, aged and refined. There is a reception area to welcome guests who come to meet the wines and the people who created them. It is the place where we continuously develop and constructively evaluate our production and marketing strategies. This is the Negro family‚is real life, a life that pulses and projects this small group of people into the future world. Here, with the support of his wife Marisa, their daughter Emanuela and their three sons, Gabriele, Angelo and Giuseppe, who all work in the family business, Giovanni Negro evaluates. The result of this union between technology and tradition, and the younger and older generations, is the production of pleasant wines, which are impeccable in terms of quality, with strong, complex structures and rich personalities that win support in Italy and around the world.

Our wineyard is only 4 hectare placed in a little Medieval Village in Tavernelle, in the south of Montalcino; the scenary of peace and quiet, surrounded by woods and vineyards, by colors and perfumes really charming and the air from the near Maremma create a perfect climate to grow and to mature our grapes. Marchetti Sergio owner of the estate of Fossacolle, belongs to an old patriarchal family of the 18th century. This family‚is descendants have ever been living and farming on the land of a large and noble lineage. At the beginning of the 80ties, the owner of this land, sold the territories where the Marchettis worked and decided to donate them the ‚iPodere Fossacolle‚i. Barone Pizzini

Wines of this winery are for sale on Stelo italian wine

This year we are celebrating 140 years since the company was founded. The history of a winery is considered by all to be an important heritage of tradition, knowledge and experience; but today we could not be proud of this milestone if it didn’t represent the completion of a journey, or perhaps even the fulfilment of a destiny, that today allows us to drink only the fruit of uncontaminated nature from our glasses and our way of loving that nature, which consists of listening in the vineyard and respect in the cellar. We have allowed ourselves to be led, one generation after another, by an imaginary thread, or rather, by roots sunk deep down in our land that urge us to respect the life of that extraordinary microcosm that makes every terroir unique. Today, this story of research, commitment, hard work, study, concern and satisfaction, culminates in a goal, or rather a pure wine, devoid of any residue foreign to nature.

Poderi di Ghiaccioforte

Wines of this winery are for sale on Stelo italian wine

A black grape variety was grown in the vineyards of the Great Duke of Tuscany. Inspired by the dark coat of the horses pulling the coaches in the Maremma area, the Great Duke christened this variety ‚imorellino‚i. Today, Morellino di Scansano, the name for Sangiovese in this area, has made the Maremma area famous worldwide as the new frontier for fine, sunny wines in a region that traditionally produces great Reds for laying down, Tuscany. About ten years ago, we chose the Morellino di Scansano DOC area, in the commune of Scansano (in the province of Grosseto), to found Poderi di Ghiaccioforte, which takes its name from the nearby Etruscan archaeological site. This land won us over above all for its natural and extraordinary suitability for winemaking, but at the same time we were enchanted by the art and nature in this area: the Argentario promontory, the islands of Elba and Giglio, the Uccellina Park, Mount Amiata, the Saturnia thermal springs and the archaeological sites from Etruscan civilization. Since 2004 Podere di Ghiaccioforte has followed a regularly certified protocol for organic viticulture, although the decision to grow Morellino without using chemical products was actually made much earlier, in response to certain questions the winery had posed concerning ethics, the environment and technical and productive quality.

Pievalta

Wines of this winery are for sale on Stelo italian wine

Verdicchio is the most famous native grape variety from the Marche. Verdicchio finds perfect symbiosis with the soil and climate only in Castelli di Jesi, in the high Camertina valley around Matelica, where it can express itself to its full potential, which doesn’t happen outside the Marche or even in other areas of the region. Pievalta started in the Marche, in Castelli di Jesi, to set up a project to develop Verdicchio through organic viticulture, biodynamic farming techniques and experimenting vinification in amphorae, as per ancient methods.

Nardello

Wines of this winery are for sale on Stelo italian wine

A viticultural family since several generations, the company can count on around 14ha of land, most of which constitute a historical core that has always been owned by the Nardellos. This is testified by documents in the capitular library of Verona which date back to the XI century and certify that in the past the family was a leaseholder of the bishop‚is properties in Monteforte. In almost all the vineyards the average vine age is very high: around 40/50 years. However some vines have been purchased recently, or planted recently using new growing techniques that are more appropriate for high quality viticulture. The vineyards are situated between Mount Zoppega in Monteforte and Mount Tondo in Soave, both within the ‚izona Classica‚i, the area that is more prone to yield a prestigious Soave. Geographically speaking these two hills represent the extreme south side of the zona classica, so this was taken as an opportunity to baptize the first Soave Classico of the company, Soave Meridies. The growing technique of the oldest vines is the classical ‚ipergola veronese‚i, although it has been adapted to decrease the plants vigour and create a better tree balance, which will then ease the vinification steps. As for the new vines, the cultivation method is the Guyot, whereby the trees are more dense and the yield per plant is lower, thus allowing better sun radiation as compared to a traditional plants. A little pedological oddness: the soils of mount Zoppega distinguish themselves from others because they are very dark coloured and have a high clay percentage, characteristics that make them richer, deeper and therefore able to produce finer wines with more body that can age longer. The viticultural techniques focus on a specific objective, namely a plants balance that helps reach the complete maturation with high sugar levels and good amounts of aromatic components, all necessary conditions to obtain balanced and long lasting products

Montedelma

Pietro Berardi, following the family tradition since 1929, working with passion in the wine sector, opened in 2000 Tenuta Montedelma. His entrepreneurial spirit, combined with a feeling for wine-growing territory, forces him to deal with body and soul in creating this small farm, situated on the slopes of Mount Delma prince devoting himself to winemaking in the area: Franciacorta DOCG. The company philosophy is focused on maintaining all the typical characteristics of the grapes coming from our own vineyards and for their exaltation, through delicate work in the cellar. The strong bond and absolute respect of the territory in which we operate, leads us to the use of integrated pest management methods to minimize the use of substances harmful for the environment, both for the operator.

La Togata

Wines of this winery are for sale on Stelo italian wine

La Togata Winery is the owner of a little Farm in Montalcino (Siena), situated in an ancient 1600 farmhouse, originally connected to the Castle of Argiano. It has some hectares of lands for wine and oil. In particular, as regard the vineyard, the Farm is entitled to have vineyards listed in Albo of Brunello in the area of Pieve of S. Sigismondo, Montosoli and Pietrafocaia.
The vineyards are situated at different levels and are exposed to the sun all day long. The age of vines, from which the
Brunello wine is produced, is over twenty years old. The Farm aims to achieve a very limited quantity of bottles of Brunello di Montalcino, with the unique characteristic of body, elegance and aroma. The vines are in excellent conditions and the grapes are pruned twice. During the harvest, the main criterion of choice is to harvest three grapes out of five. After this, the grapes are again subject to another selection in the Cellar, where they are processed according to the old tradition. The wine, after maturing for three years in barrels, is refined for at least twelve months in bottles before it is sold. The wine is deep red, with a frutty bouquet, full balanced and smooth, particulary elegant with a pleasant aftertaste. The wine lends itself towards a long life.

Terrabianca

In the medieval times Podere Terrabianca found itself in the ambiguous situation of being situated in the part of the countryside under the rule of Florence and, at the same time, also in the diocese of the Bishop of Siena. The very first documents mentioning its presence, dated 1085, describe it as being a country estate as, in fact, its name clearly implies. Today the winery Terrabianca is located at the heart of the Chianti Classico region, in the middle of Tuscany, 12 km from Siena and 50 km from Florence. The soil which consists of layers of chalk, sand and clay from the palaeozoic and mesozoic ages has the ideal composition to grow grapes of highest quality. On the 124 ha, 307 acres, there are vineyards surrounded by olive groves and woods. They are in the best position, south and southeast exposure, at 250 to 500 mt. above sea level. The grape variety are Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Canaiolo, Chardonnay, Malvasia and Trebbiano Toscano are grown to produce a total of 350.000 bottles a year.

Triacca

The name says it all: we are a family business. Complete and independent responsibility for the business is now in the hands of the fourth generation of the Triacca family. Both our family home and the business are situated in Campascio, in the Swiss valley of Poschiavo. The vineyards and the winery are just across the border in Italy, in the nearby Valtellina and in Tuscany. We have a track record of almost 100 years as Swiss vine-growers and wine-makers, commercialising our Italian wines for the most part in our own domestic market of Switzerland – much to the dismay of Italian wine connoisseurs. Our wines are consistently awarded top scores in the Italian wine guide Gambero Rosso. Nevertheless, our wines are increasingly prized in Italy, the United States, Germany, Benelux, Austria and England. La Gatta winery. La Gatta was built 500 years ago. The impressive building was not always a winery, but formerly served as a Dominican convent and was for many years a pilgrimage site. Later the De Gatti family from the Comasco made it their summer residence, and gave it their name. It was the Mascioni family from Poschiavo who first started making wine there. La Gatta is situated in Bianzone, close to the vineyard where the history of our family business began in 1897. And so it made perfect sense for us to buy this venerable old building when it came up for sale in 1969. The production facilities are situated 5 kilometres away in the valley, at Villa di Tirano. Here the grapes from 45 hectares (112.5 acres) of vines are vinified, of which La Gatta has the lion‚is share with 13 hectares (32.5 acres). We also own 10 hectares (25 acres) in Sassella, 9 hectares (22.5 acres) in Valgella and Tirano and 4 hectares (10 acres) in Villa di Tirano. Total annual production is 350,000 bottles. La Madonnina winery. Back in the 18th century, Radda, Gaiole and Castellina, as well as Greve and Panzano were already recognised as the centre of the Chianti Classico, an area of gently rolling hills situated at between 250 and 550 metres (750-1650 feet) above sea level. The La Madonnina winery belongs to Strada, a small part of the sprawling Greve vineyard. We acquired the property in 1969. For the first harvest we had to wait till 1975. Rebuilding was finished only in 1979. The long-abandoned land had been used for hunting, and needed clearing and re-planting. The former Villa Franchi required a complete facelift, new cellars, water tanks and access roads. After acquisition of neighbouring land in 1987 and 1990, the whole estate now comprises 400 hectares (1000 acres) of olive groves, woodland, fields and meadows. One hundred hectares (250 acres) are planted with vines: 90% Sangiovese, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Merlot. La Madonnina is the biggest winery in Greve. The cellar houses 19,000 hectolitres (494,000 gallons), of which 700 (18,000 gallons) are in new oak barrels. Annual production is about 650,000 bottles. To this we are adding a steadily increasing production of top-quality extra-virgin olive oil. Santavenere winery. The Montepulciano region extends across the upper Chiana valley eastwards towards the lake of Trasimeno and opening into Umbria. The vineyards are situated in gently hilly countryside, at between 250 and 600 metres (750 and 1800 feet) above sea level. The beautifully preserved medieval town of Montepulciano is well known for its Vino Nobile. The Santavenere winery was taken over by us in 1990. The original 6 hectares (15 acres) of vines have now grown to 33 (82.5 acres): 28 hectares of Sangiovese, known in Montepulciano as Prugnolo Gentile, with the remaining plots planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlos, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The estate comprises in total 80 hectares (200 acres) of olive groves, woodland and fields. The newly refurbished cellar holds 4,000 hectolitres (104,000 gallons). In addition there is capacity in small oak barrels for up to 200 hectolitres (5,200 gallons). Annual production is 150,000 bottles.

Casa di Terra

The company was founded in 1950 when the grandparents of the current owners, the brothers Giuliano and Gessica Frollani, moved to Tuscany, and more exactly to Bolgheri, in Castagneto Carducci municipality. Since then, the family Frollani has always cultivated their own land located adjacent to Via Bolgherese, for producing vegetables, oil and wine. In 1997, the traditional cultivation system was changed to leave more and more room to vineyard. In fact, two-hectare vineyard was set up with high plant density, chosen clones, low yield per hectare and international grape varities as Cabernet and Merlot. In 2001, a further transformation took place when the brothers Giuliano and Gessica Frollani met the agronomist Gianni Moscardini and they all decide to tune together their experience on both the practical and the theoretical ground, and to set up the vineyard on their whole area, changing the traditional culivation system. Since then the farm business called Fattoria Casa di Terra was created. Its aim is to be a model farm: approximately 25-hectare vineyard in extremely good conditions with rose bushes to the end of rows of wine in an area where, thanks to the happy combination of suitable weather and soil, the vines produces at its best, as witnessed by the grown plants of the neighbouring farms.
